Sunshine Hospital Mental Health & Wellbeing Centre – Sunshine, VIC
O.P. Industries delivered mechanical, HVAC and services infrastructure works for the Sunshine Mental Health & Wellbeing Centre, a newly completed acute mental health facility located within the Sunshine Hospital campus in St Albans. The centre delivers modern, therapeutic mental health environments aligned with the Victorian Government’s Mental Health Beds Expansion Program, responding to the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System and expanding acute care capacity in Melbourne’s west.
The project comprises a 52-bed acute mental health and wellbeing centre designed to support multidisciplinary care, including treatment rooms, sensory and family spaces, internal courtyards and integrated garden areas that promote recovery and wellbeing. Patron comfort, privacy and safety were key design drivers, with external architectural articulation and finishes inspired by natural materials to create a human-scaled, non-institutional environment.
The facility was delivered using modular construction techniques, where major building units were prefabricated offsite and then installed on location as engineered modules. This approach accelerated on-site delivery, reduced disruption to the live healthcare environment and improved quality control in mechanical, structural and architectural integration — particularly important in high-performance clinical spaces.
O.P. Industries’ scope of works included the delivery of mechanical and HVAC systems designed to maintain controlled indoor environmental conditions essential for acute healthcare settings. This encompassed the installation of air conditioning plant, ventilation and fresh air systems, ductwork, mechanical plant rooms and associated infrastructure required to support thermal comfort, indoor air quality and compliance with healthcare building standards. Where possible, services coordination anticipated integration with offsite modular structures and internal courtyard planning to ensure seamless environmental performance.
Delivered in collaboration with the broader project team, consultants and head contractor, the mechanical and services solution contributed to the timely completion and operational readiness of a critical community health asset. The centre provides more than 18,900 days of patient care annually and improves access to acute mental health services for residents across the western metropolitan region.
